A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine which is quite similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machines are mostly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are used for transporting pallets and completing particular jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks could be raised to the required level that makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the required materials, are located on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then entire platform can be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, several companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers can be used to complete these specific tasks at some companies instead.
